Thomas J. Pyle Biography

Title:
President of the Institute for Energy Research (IER)
Position:
Con to the question "Can Alternative Energy Effectively Replace Fossil Fuels?"
Reasoning:

“[I]f alternative energy could survive without taxpayer subsidization, it wouldn’t be an ‘alternative’ energy at all. But it can’t, and so it is. And there’s a good reason for it…

Perhaps that is why the latest round of proposed mandates for transitioning to these non-existent alternatives are more often than not accompanied by apocalyptic warnings of imminent doom in the absence of government intervention.

Whatever the case, proposals to ‘immediately phase out fossil fuels and transition to alternatives’ are an even taller task when one considers what qualifies as ‘alternatives’ under the definition prescribed by the majority of eco-alarmists and their friends in Washington. Nuclear and conventional hydroelectric power, for instance -the only proven, prolific and affordable energy sources capable of displacing any significant amount of the energy that coal, oil, and natural gas provide – don’t qualify as alternatives to which we must transition. Nor does more than half of the biomass energy we currently produce, as it’s defined in House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Waxman’s most recent plan.”
